Reflexology for Men’s Health

Reflexology for Men's Health

Reflexology is as much for men as it is for women with all the same health benefits. There is a common misconception that reflexology is a pampering treatment for women due to a lack of understanding of what reflexology is and how it can help. All complementary and alternative therapies can benefit men and women greatly.

Reflexology is a very deeply relaxing treatment which helps to reduce stress. Below is some information regarding how stress affects the body.

The autonomic nervous system has a direct role in the physical response to stress. It is divided into the sympathetic nervous system SNS and the parasympathetic nervous system PNS. When the body is stressed the SNS contributes to what is known as the fight or flight response. The body moves it's energy resources to fight off the perceived life threat, or to flee from an enemy. The SNS signals for stress hormones to be released. The adrenal glands release hormones called adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones together with actions from autonomic nerves, cause processes to change. The heart beats faster, breathing rate increases, blood vessels in the arms and legs dilate, digestive processes change and glucose levels in the blood increase to deal with the perceived emergency. Once the crisis is over the body usually returns to an unstressed state, the recovery is facilitated by the PNS. Both the SNS and PNS have powerful interactions with the immune system. Chronis stress, experiencing stressors over a long period of time can result in considerable strain on the mind and body. Continuous activation of the nervous system can cause many problems to other body systems. Reflexology helps with relaxation, sleep, improves circulation and encourages the body to remove toxins by aiding lymphatic flow. It also provides some much needed time out and a quiet space to just be, away from the busy lives we all live. This may be particulalry helpful if you are suffering from anxiety or depression.

Many people comment to me that they cannot tolerate having their feet touched, this is a common problem. I would like to reassure you that reflexology is a very specific, confident touch of the feet that does not cause you to feel uncomfortable. People also express concern about how their feet look and feeling self conscious about this. This is not a problem, I see many pairs of feet all shapes, sizes and conditions. The only foot conditions I am unable to work with are athletes foot, severe nail fungal infections or multiple varrucas, due to them being highly contagious. If you are unsure please contact me for a chat or via email I'd be happy to discuss further or check your suitability for treatment.
